A Little Bit Late...but Still Done
Monday, June 18, 2007

Acc. Math Question About Measures of Interior Angles,
"Find the measure of an interior angle of a regular heptagon. Round to the nearest degree, if necessary."
A) 129 degrees
B) 120 degrees
C) 903 degrees
D) 140 degrees
To do this question you need to use the formula "(n-2)*180" to find out what the sum of the interior angles are. n is the number of sides that the figure has. A heptagon has 7 sides....so...
(7-2)*180= 900
Now that you know that the sum of the interior angles is 900 degrees you take 900 and divide it by 7.
900/7=129
So the answer is A) 129 degrees
I hope this might help you guys a bit, and good luck on the exam!

Currency conversions
http://www.xe.com/ is a website that has the currency rates without the bank markups, just the rates.
Our assignment is to do A,B, C, using the currency chart that is already on the blog.

This is the currency table for differant places from the TD Bank
Mr. Max then asked us a question here is the question:
We then got assigned a homework question to help us learn how to figure out the currency.
This is Captain Kolan, I was not here on thursdays class sorry, and im sorry for how late this post is but better late then never. From what I have gathered on thursdays class was a work period that started with a challenging mental math. Remember about the 62 objectives due and dont stop working on them because 2 weeks and then we will be worrying about writing exams already. Time flys when your having fun! Well I don't really have to much useful stuff for you but I thought Id leave you with something math related. http://www.geocities.com/capecanaveral/lab/2619/comics.html
Hope you enjoy the comics!

Our math test for the day was a little joke that said "You hunt and gather and still find time to blog?" with two cavemen and one drawing on the wall....
Dont forget your 62 objectives

Today we started off with mental math. It was alright to me. Mr Max was happy because he got his pen fixed. That didn't take long either because he broke it Monday and got it back Wednesday. That very impressive to me.
For the rest of the class we went on a Participation Walk, it was an all right walk. We went down to the Legion Park and around there then to the Skating Rink. If you had money you could of went and bought a hot dog. But there was on problem kids were skipping the walk and driving there trucks and cars instead. That was bad by the looks of the teachers. I think everyone should of went on the walk and not skip because we were doing that as a school thing.

Tax Template
Tuesday, May 29, 2007
may 29
Total Port. Asses=total asses. X 45% (round to nearest 10$)
After that we Mr. Maxx found this nifty website http://www.gov.mb.ca/ia/programs/property_assessment/search_township_range.html. We got sidetracked a bit but it was fun. We then bought a house in Calgary. It was a nice place, few bedrooms, bathroom, generally a nice neighbourhood. We then used the TM and figured how much it will cost to buy in 25 years if mortgage rates were to go up and it came out to be around a million dollars. Wow. Kind of puts things in perspective.
Monday May 28, 2007
Then the rest of the block was working with our property tax template. Mr. Max was showing us the formulas to put in the template. It is a little confusing now, but once it is done it will be very useful.
Everyone should still be working on accelerated math, because the school year is getting close to an end.

After we were done that we had to make a spreadsheet without any formulas. It had to be ready to put formulas in it. The format it had to be in is on page B-7 and B-9. Accelerated math should be worked on as usual.
Wednesday, May 23, 2007
Today May 23 we started off the class with a good old mental math, then we took a look at our camper question and learned the proper way to make the spreadsheet for it. I have to wait to put pictures on here, because Mr. Max had to leave class for a moment and I wasnt able to get any pictures of the formulas I apologize but I will get them as soon as possible.
I also found this game some of you might have heard of its kinda neat it asks you questions and you can never beat it or I couldnt anyways, try it out haha http://www.stuff.co.uk/think.html
I hope you enjoy,

Preparing to Study: A Good Study Place
You need a good study place to be prepared to study. You should be able to answer YES to all of the following questions:
1. Is my Study Place available to me whenever I need it?
Your Study Place does you little good if you cannot use it when you need it. If you are using a Study Place that you must share with others for any reason, work out a schedule so that you know when you can use it.
2. Is my Study Place free from interruptions?
It is important to have uninterrupted study time. You may have to hang a DO NOT DISTURB sign on the door or take the phone off the hook.
3. Is my Study Place free from distractions?
Research shows that most students study best in a quiet environment. If you find that playing a stereo or TV improves your mood, keep the volume low.
4. Does my Study Place contain all the study materials I need?
Be sure your Study Place includes reference sources and supplies such as pens and pencils, paper, ruler, calculator, and whatever else you might need. If you use a computer for your schoolwork, it should be in your Study Place .
5. Does my Study Space contain a large enough desk or table?
While working on an assignment or studying for a test, use a desk or table that is large enough to hold everything you need. Allow enough room for writing and try to avoid clutter.
6. Does my Study Place have enough storage space?
You need enough room to store your study materials. Be sure you have enough storage space to allow you to keep your desktop or other work surface clear of unnecessary materials that can get in the way.
7. Does my Study Place have a comfortable chair?
A chair that is not comfortable can cause discomfort or pain that will interfere with your studying. A chair that is too comfortable might make you sleepy. Select a chair in which you can sit for long periods while maintaining your attention.
8. Does my Study Place have enough light?
The amount of light you need depends on what you are doing. The important thing is that you can clearly see what you need to see without any strain or discomfort.
9. Does my Study Place have a comfortable temperature?
If your Study Place is too warm, you might become sleepy. If it is too cold, your thinking may slow down and become unclear. Select a temperature at which your mind and body function best.
Having a good Study Place is important for good studying.

Buy A Quad!
ex. Chuck needs a new quad. He secures financing at the local Credit Union for 7.5%. He will borrow the money for 24 months, and interest will be compounded monthly. If the quad, before taxes, retails for $11 398. PST and GST need to applied.
a) Calculate his monthly payment
b) Calculate his total repaid over the 24 months.
c) If he was able to put a down payment on the quad of $1000, how would this affect his monthly payment specifically?

Compound Interest
Thursday, May 10, 2007
May 10
Max jumped us right in to Interest. We were given the task to find the definition of interest and we had to send them to his computer using Novel, we came up with quite a few definitions and the best one was: Money charged by a lender to a borrower for the use of his or her money. There is an interest formula called the simple interest formula I=(p)(r)(t) {Interest=principal*Rate*Time}. We worked on a spread sheet to lay out the formulas on simple interest formulas.
We got an assignment due for monday Pg E-9 Ex) #2; questions 1-11

We didn't do any Mental Math today. For the rest of the class we work on are budget question's for the people who weren't done it and if you were done it, we worked on are Accelerated Math questions. If your all done that I don't know What you could work on. Ask Mr. Max what do to after your done.
So about the lab top thing. What would do if the school took all the lab tops away and computers? Please comment about those two question. Well I'm going to say if they took all of the lab tops away and computers we would all be sick of reading from text books. The teachers would be sick of teaching us stuff that we could of learned off of the web. That we could of learned from a computer. We also couldn't use the cool problems like Graphmatica etc. and we would have to do work by hand to. Hilary has a good point. If you hadn't read her blog go read.
Well I'm going to shut up now and do some of my own work and get caught up. So see ya.

Tuesday, May 08
Mr. Max brought up a good point in class. Are laptops useful in class or not? I can see peoples reasonings for both points. Laptops can be useful in class by taking notes especially if you have bad writing. Another reason why they might be useful is if you didn't understand something, so you could look it up without even needing to ask a teacher. Technology is so big now that not too many people don't own a computer.
A Reason why laptops may not be useful in class is because of the distraction. Many students play games on them, meaning they aren't listening to what the teacher is saying.
I can understand why some people may think differently about this topic, let me know your thoughts on this subject by commenting to this blog.

The wiki is due on monday and we should start working on the 5 case studies because they are for marks, accelerated math(obj.56) is also due monday so a guy could say we got alot of work to be doing.
The rest of the class we got time to work on whatever we had to do to get everything done.
And just to throw in a comment about the cell phones i dont think teachers could possibly ban them from school, kids these days rely on there phones for alot of communication so i figure as long as kids have friends they will have phones to beable to talk to eachother.

Budget
For most of the class we learnt how to make a spread sheet on the income that a family would make in a year month or week. We didn’t really start any thing we just got or spread sheet ready for tomorrow.
Remember we should have 56 objectives done by Friday in accelerated math. Also the Wiki assignment in due on Friday May 4.

Monday, April 30
Our wiki assignment is due Friday, May 4th and Mr. Max has a challenge for us. For bonus marks or a credit of some kind we can put in multimedia of some kind such as video, audio, a powerpoint, slideshare, and etc....
Another thing that is due is our accelerated math, we have to be done up to 56 objectives by Monday, which is the end of the geometry unit.
Today was a work class to get caught up on all of our assignments, but one thing that Mr. Max did bring up was about the cell phone banning in schools.
In my opinion, I don't think that would be the smartest idea because as a student I don't think that many students would even listen to that rule. Teachers would just be getting frustrated all day about telling the kids to put away their phone. I know that I would probably still bring my phone to school even though they were banned. If anyone has any thoughts or opinions about this topic, leave a comment and we can talk about this subject more.

Congruent- Figures or angles that have the same size and shape.
Perpendicular- Two lines are perpendicular if the angle between them is 90 degrees.
Tangent- when a line touches a circle in a single spot
Equilateral- having all of the sides of lines even in length
Origin- the center of the circle
If you want any other words defined go to..... http://www.math.com/school/glossary/glossindex.html

7 Theorems
The day started out with Mr. Maksymchuk giving us an introduction to circle geometry, we watched him construct the 7 theorems on Euklid. Neat Stuff I tell ya!
Here is a look at Theorem 1
Theorem 2
If two angles inscribed in the same circle intercept the same arc, then the angles are congruent.
Theorem 3
If an inscribed angle and a a central angle in the same circle intercept the same arc, then the measure of the central angle must be twice the measure of the inscribed angle.
Theorem 4
If in a circle, a radius or diameter intersects a chord at a right angle, then chord is bisected at the point of intersection.
Theorem 5
If a line is tangent to a circle, then the tangent line is perpendicular to the radius/diameter at the point of tangency.
Theorem 6
If tangent lines to the same circle intersect at a common external point, then the segments created from the circle to the common external point are congruent.
If a quadrilateral is cyclic, then opposite angles in the quadrilateral are supplementary (have a sum of 180).
Those are the 7 Theorems we were told to know, I hope this post is helpful to everyone. Thankyou for your time.

Canadian Food Grains Bank Presentation
The Canadian Food Grains bank was putting on the presentation. The guy spoke for a few minutes telling us how it originated and how it is currently being run. After he was done talking another presenter, Nestar, began to talk. She was born in Uganda. The area that she lived in has been experiencing civil war for the last twenty or so years. Many lives in Uganda have changed due to this. People have been taken from their homes in fear of the rebels. These people are put into IDP camps. The people in the IDP camps mainly rely on foundations like the Canadian Food Grains bank. Being taken away from their land and having few ways to make money, they need food from these donation groups.
Children in Uganda have it way harder then we do. They walk twelve kilometers, twice a day, to get from their home to where they must sleep. Kids must do this because if they don’t they may get kidnapped, and become sex slaves or rebel soldiers. The children here also may not go to school. This is because most families can’t afford supplies, and even the kids who do get to go to school don’t have good learning conditions.
Nestar also talked about how Uganda is only one of the countries that is like this. Many countries in Africa are like this, along with countries like Afghanistan that are troubled by war. She also talked about how our government has promised to help cut hunger in half by 2015, and since hunger is going up, encouraged us to talk to our government officials about this problem.

april 10th
The question is :
Find the product (1-(1/2))(1-(1/3))(1-(1/4))....(1-(1/96))
Well it is simpler then it looks!!!
First: 1-(1/2)=1/2
1-(1/3)=2/3
1-(1/4)=3/4
If you didnt notice there is a pattern (1/2) x (2/3) x (3/4) x (4/5)...and it keeps going all the way to 1-(1/96) which equals 95/96. You can just eliminate the numbers all the way from the start of the question to the end so it everything gets cancelled out except for 1 on the top and 96 on the bottom. So the answer is 1/96.
If it is explained well enough then you can jsut ask me in person but i tryed my best to do it on here so i hope it helps.

Work Day
Wednesday, April 4, 2007
April 4th 2007,
We then got into the work that was assigned to us yesterday
We continued linear Progamming and looked at some examples on the sheet that he gave us on monday.
He then showed us how to know which side to shade, by taking the original equation and choosing a point on the grid that isnt included on the line, the substitute the points in for x and y. After you have figured out the (?>=?) or (?<=?). If it is true then you shade in direction that you chose.
We were assigned #4 on page D-9 for homework tomorrow.

inequality graphing
The picture below is the 2-D inequality graphing and also the graphing rules...
This is the 1-D number line graphing.. Mr. Maks showed us how to do them and how to figure them out on a graph with out using technology
You can do these kinds of questions of graphmatica, this is how it looks...
This is how you can figure it out just on paper and with this question we found out that "0" will not work because "0" is not greater then then 6... so then you would have to shade the boundary away from the origin
And this was the homework that Mr. Mak's had assigned us to do...

Test Day!
Well on the day I was supposed to scribe we wrote a test. It was a unit test on Systems of Linear Equations. As you all know on a test day you are supposed try to come up with something useful, and meaningful for our blog. In class we had a small discussion about whether or not homework over a break, such as Spring Break or Christmas Break, is worthwhile. Certain people have certain opinions about this topic. I searched the internet for some opinions, and here are some that I found.
http://www.toddseal.com/rodin/2006/01/homework-during-break/
The link above takes you to a site where a teacher has made a post about their preference not to give homework over breaks. The teacher backs this up by saying how most students do not do their work until the last minute, or even attempt their work. He also goes on to talk about how he himself doesn't like to do very much work over breaks himself, so how can he force his students too? Other teachers have commented with their opinions, along with some other interesting people who thought it was necessary to leave some pretty moot comments.
http://stophomework.com/the-case-against-homework
This second link is actually an article about a book that has been written about homework. It tells a little about the book and talks about too much homework possibly being connected to obesity, and a reason why kids are not as active anymore.
My final part of this post will be to leave you with this poll. The question is "Do you think the homework over a break is worthwhile? Please give me your input, and feel free to leave comments as you please, keeping in mind that this is a class blog and must be appropriate for school.
| ||||
Do you think that homework over a break is worthwhile?

Once again I would like to apologize to my classmates about this post being so late, but I hope you guys will take a look at it, and participate in the poll.

This unit is mostly going to be solving problems with skills that we may already know, but just improving on them.
To find the absolute value on your calculator, you press 2nd, then zero, and it is the first one on there-abs.
In graphmatica you just type in abs and put the letter or number in brackets.
On tuesdays Mr. Max is here until 4:30 for extra help if needed!
The objectives that have to be mastered are 32-45ish.
